And hey, if you live in the country, and there are no designated hiking trails for you to enjoy, nothing is stopping you from creating your own. A quick Google search of your parks department website should net you several hiking trails to choose from. If you live in an urban area, it should not take you long to find a hiking trail near you. As the health movement has grown in the U.S., so too has the movement to create more and more of these trails. Most cities of a certain size have a parks department, and most have allocated monies for the creation, and upkeep, of hiking trails in today’s world. I would hope that is true of every town and city. I think it is safe to say that most city governments across this nation understand the value of hiking trails for their citizens. ![]() They are not designed with long-distance, overnight backpacking in mind, but rather hiking paths, ranging from 10-25 miles in length, most paved, all nicely graded, perfect for day hikes through natural scenery, allowing Americans a chance to experience the wonders of life at no cost.īravo, I say, to those who run that conservancy. It is alive and well in all fifty states, an ambitious undertaking with the sole purpose of providing quality hiking paths for Americans who are eager to get outside and enjoy some natural beauty and, in the process, improve their quality of life. This writer recently became aware of an agency called “Rails to Trails Conversancy,” an organization which supports and tends to over 40,000 miles of hiking trails, across the country, all made from abandoned and no longer used railroad paths.
